By Nkoli Opara (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.
This was disclosed via a signed statement released on Thursday by military spokesman, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu. Major-General Yahaya, before his latest appointment, was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counterterrorism, Counter-Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation HADIN KAI, according to the statement.
Yahaya’s appointment comes few days after the demise of his predecessor, Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru, who lost his life in a ghastly plane crash, alongside 10 others, who were buried last Saturday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.
The new army chief’s appointment, which is with immediate effect, comes as the country continues to face plethora of security threats from armed bandits, insurgents, irredentist groups and other violent forces.
