By Nkoli Opara (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Professor Itse Sagay says it is time for Nigeria to scrap the 1999 constitution and adopt the 1963 Republican Charter

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who doubles as the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), made the clarion call on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, stressing that the 1963 Republican Constitution addressed all the issues responsible for the growing unrest across the country.

According to Sagay, if the Republican Constitution is adopted, with necessary adjustments that will accommodate states rather than the regional arrangement the country once had, most ongoing “agitations will die down and everybody will be happy,” he said.

The elder statesman advised that the contents of the report of the Nasir El-Rufai headed All Progressives Congress (APC) Committee on Restructuring should be studied and implemented, adding however, that it would be better to implement the report in a totally new Constitution, rather than amending the existing one which would involve lots of adjustments
