Nigerian Guild Of Editors Condemn NBC’s Threat To Channels TV

By Nkoli Opara (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Nigerian Editors under the aegis of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, have slammed the threat issued by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to Channels Television, over an interview with the spokesperson of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Emmanuel Powerful.

The NBC’s reaction came via a statement signed by Mustapha Isah, President, and Mary Atolagbe, General Secretary, in which it asserted that it would not stand by and watch media houses being threatened by regulatory agencies in the country.

According to the guild, press freedom is threatened when media houses are constrained to operate in an atmosphere of fear, expressing its support for  Channels and its readiness to go to any length in defending press freedom in the country, accusing NBC of double standards as it allowed stations that aired Sheikh Gumi’s meetings with terrorists in their camps, but hurriedly sanctioned Channels TV for broadcasting an interview with IPOB’s spokesman.

Powerful had featured on Channels programme “Politics Today” on Sunday April 25, 2021, during which he allegedly made inciting statements, according to the NBC, which in a letter ordered the immediate suspension of the programme.
