South-South Leaders Call For Restructuring, True Federalism In Nigeria

By Nkoli Opara (AGENMDAWATCHDOG) – Governors and leaders of the South-South geopolitical zone have called for the restructuring of Nigeria, in tandem with the principles of true federalism, as the only guarantee for positive peace  in Nigeria.

The position of the South-South region was communicated by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, the Chairman of the South-South Governors Forum, on Tuesday, during the regional stakeholders meeting with a presidential delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, who met with the governors and other leaders of the region at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

According to Governor Okowa, while addressing the delegation, the South-South geopolitical zone was convinced that the peace, security, stability and development of the country could only be guaranteed by the  restructuring of the country in a manner that would guarantee true fiscal federalism and devolution of powers to the states to create and manage their own police and security system within a federal structure..

Okowa called for a return to the status quo during the first republic during which the country practiced true federalism guided by the principle of derivation, revenue sharing, and control of resources by each state of the Federation.
