By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The Federal government has commenced the transfer of 20,000 to poor women resident in the rural areas of Bauchi State, as part of its conditional cash transfer initiative for poor and vulnerable rural women.
According to the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Paulen Tallen, during the first phase of the disbursement of the funds to beneficiaries in Bauchi State, approximately 1,000 women are expected to benefit from the disbursements.
The minister added that those qualified for the disbursement must be petty traders, widows, the vulnerable, and small and medium scale business operators.
Tallen discloses that about 200 women have so far benefitted from the disbursements in Bauchi Local Government.
As part of the Federal Government’s Conditional Cash Transfer program, meant to stem the negative impact of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic on the poor and vulnerable members of the society, cash disbursement were earlier made to some households in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Recall that a recent release by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), stated that 40 per cent of Nigeria’s population (approximately 83 million people) live below the poverty line, 52% of these extremely poor live in the country’s rural areas.
