Senate Flays Underfunding Of OAGF

By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) –  The Senate has flayed the gross underfunding of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), saying the agency cannot function effectively without proper funding.

This was brought to the public’s attention by the members of the Senate Committee on Finance at a budget defence session on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja, where they stated that lack of funding would inhibit the agency from effectively performing its core role of ensuring transparency and prudence in the administration of government resources.

According to the legislators, the agency’s 2021 budget was inadequate, considering revenue leakages being currently experienced by the country.

During the session, the office of the AGF presented a budget proposal of N483.4 million as capital expenditure and N3.711 billion for the 2021 financial year,  while the Senate Committee questioned the lack of a mechanism to supervise daily revenue generated by government agencies, expressing its displeasure at the dominance of REMITA as the sole payment platform used by all government agencies, ordering the AGF to cme up with a mechanism for monitoring government revenue in real-time and include the cost in the 2021 budget.
