By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, said that the nationwide #EndSARS protests exposed the dangers of fake news to the health of the country.
Dare disclosed this on Monday, during an interview on Channels Television, where he stated that fake news was not just a Nigerian problem, but global in dimension.
“The protests brought home the dangers of fake news. Several months back, Nobel Laureate Winner, Professor Wole Soyinka said fake news is like the bomb that can destroy the world and it is sure that the bomb will come from Nigeria.
“What happened during the protests has been reviewed to a certain extent. We have seen debunking of several of the stories of deaths that came up.
“Everyone is worried about the negative impacts of fake news,” he said.
Dare stated that moves were being made by Nigeria to regulate the social media, just like other countries were doing, promising that the National Assembly would work out a regulatory framework on social media to prevent the spread of fake news in the future.
