By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Professor Mahmood Yakubu has been given a second stint as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his reappointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
This was confirmed via a statement on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, who disclosed that Professor Yakubu’s reappointment as INEC chairman was contained in letter addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
According to Adesina, the President’s action was in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). Professor Yakubu’s reappointment is, however, subject to approval by members of the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
President Buhari first appointed Yakubu as INEC Chairman in November 2015, succeeding Pofessor Attahiru Jega. He has conducted several polls in the country.
