By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy for the position of the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has received endorsement from the European Union (EU).
According to Bloomberg, a business news outlet, anonymous officials had revealed that all the 27 EU member countries, on Monday, in Brussels, agreed to back Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala’s bid for the vacant WTO job.
Bloomberg also reported that Yoo Myung-hee, South Korea’s trade minister, was being backed by the Uinited States for the same position.
Okonjo-Iweala and Myung-hee were selected from a strong field of candidates who had fiercely contested for the WTO’s top job vacated by Roberto Azevedo. The final winner is expected to emerge by November 7.
