WHO: There Is No Proof Remdesivir Reduces COVID-19 Deaths, Studies Reveal.


By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The antiviral drug remdesivir, does not prevent COVID-19 deaths, according to recent findings by a study supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), despite claims that the drug was one of the most promising treatments for the disease.

According to the study posted online on Thursday, Remdesivir, was one of several reviewed in a large study of more than 11,000 people across 30 countries, the drug “appeared to have little or no effect on hospitalised COVID-19 patients, as indicated by overall mortality, initiation of ventilation, and duration of hospital stay”.

Though yet to be subjected to peer-review or published in a scientific journal, the findings seem to contradict some major US studies that have shown that Remdesivir can reduce the duration of hospital stays for COVID-19 patients.

Remdesivir , made by US pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences and originally intended as a treatment for Ebola, was part of the experimental cocktail given to US President Donald Trump when he caught the new coronavirus last month,
