By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Prelude to the 2021 Local Government Council polls in Delta State, Mr. Jerry Okonta, one of the aspirants seeking the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to contest for the Ika South LGA Chairmanship position, has thrown a bold challenge to his would-be rivals, saying he is the most qualified to succeed the incumbent Council Chairman when he calls time on his tenure in Office.
Speaking exclusively with AgendaWatchdog, via telephone chat yesterday, Mr. Okonta said he was relying on his deep grassroots base, years of altruistic service to his community, natural leadership abilities and ultimately God to obtain the PDP’s ticket and subsequently gain a resounding victory for the party at the poll proper.
According to Okonta, he was not in the race to gain mere pecuniary concessions, as has become the norm these days, or throw in the towel on polling day, but was committed to becoming the next Chairman of Ika South LGA, with a view to improving the lot of his people by following the development and people-centered footprints of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa of Delta State.
In Okonta’s words: “I am the voice of the people of Ika South, and If voted into office, I will be loyal to my constituency, the people who gave me their collective mandate to serve, and will work assiduously towards bettering their lives by providing them the dividends of democracy”.
“I am not contesting to be compensated prior to the election or contesting to Lose. I am interested in nothing, except to become the next Chairman of Ika South LGA in order to help my people by following Governor Okowa’s development footsteps. I am contesting to win and by the grace of God, I will win. My Victory is Certain”.
Mr. Okonta has kick started an early campaign for the Ika South LG tiara, mobilizing vigorously towards achieving his goal, even when the dates for the primaries and elections respectively have not yet been announced. He is believed to have the backing of some stalwarts of the PDP in Delta State.
