Banning FSARS Was Unnecessary, Says Ex-CP, Calls For Revamping Of Internal Mechanism

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The recent ban of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and other tactical squads of the force from routine patrols, by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has been carpeted by a former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, who is also the Special Adviser on Security to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

Owoseni expressed his views on the matter during an interview session on Channels Television, suggesting that an audit of the organisation’s internal mechanism would have been a better option.

“It is not the best way to go; it is actually not the way to go. I think what the police leadership should do is to properly audit the internal oversight mechanism that is in place,” he said.

Reacting to calls by Nigerians for the disbandment of SARS, the ex-cop said the problem of SARS was basically operational, as some of the SARS were guilty of acting outside their core job descriptions, calling on the Force to put some checks and balances in place to ensure that SARS operatives acted within the bounds of their core mandates.
