Military Laid Foundation For Nigeria’s Development, Democracy And Economic Growth

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Nigeria’s first self styled Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, on Friday declared that the military laid the foundation for Nigeria’s all-round development, and also prepared her for democratic rule.

The former military strongman said this while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s NewsNight.

According to the former Head of State, the military set the stage for the developments the country’s successive governments have built on, contrary to widespread belief that it was the harbinger of the country’s present woes, adding that the military actually kick started the infrastructural and economic development of the country, including the practice of democratic governance.

“No, we didn’t provide problems. We tried to provide the framework upon which subsequent governments who are going to come after us could build upon,” he said.

“Most of the infrastructural developments, even the democracy, we midwifed it. We started development, democracy, and a free-market economy.

“We were able to capture what the world is doing now and to try to bring it into our own country. The politicians, civilians are the best people in handling all of these things.”
