By Lillian Ogbonna (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Nigerian Lawyers under the aegis of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) are set to strip the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, of his Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, title, consequent to the minister’s amendment to the rules of professional conduct for legal practitioners (RPC), 2007.
The call for the AGF’s demotion was made via a petition initiated on Change.org by Izu Aniagu and titled “Sign to strip Nigeria’s AGF, Abubakar Malami the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.”
According to the letters of the petition by the body of benchers, Malami’s decision was unilateral as he did not consult the NBA, but instead accepted legal inputs from individuals outside the legal profession.
According to the lawyers, Malami took the decision barely a week after a new faction, known as the New NBA, made up largely of northern lawyers, who broke away from the parent body, citing the removal of Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s name from the list of speakers at the 2020 NBA conference, wrote a petition to Malami, asking his Ministry to recognise it as a decision making body of lawyers in the country.
973 lawyers are said to had signed the petition to strip Malami of his SAN title, as at September 14, 2020.
