(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – According to President Muhammadu Buhari, 5 million Nigerian households will be provided with solar home systems within the next 12 months, courtesy the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The President, who was represented by Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo, made the disclosure at the first year Ministerial Performance Review Retreat held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, September 7, 2020.
According to Buhari, government had commenced the process of making funds available, through the CBN, for manufacturers and retailers of Off-Grid Solar Home Systems and Mini-Grids, who would be making the systems available, adding that the initiative would provide 250,000 jobs and positively impact approximately 25 million beneficiaries through the installation, giving more Nigerians access to electricity through a reliable and sustainable solar system.
In all, the support to Solar Home System manufacturers, and the bulk procurement of local meters, will create over 300,000 local jobs, and ensure that Nigeria joins the path to full electrification.
POTENTIAL IMPACT: Apart from the fact that more Nigerians will have access to electricity, the initiative will create more jobs and positively impact the country through the stimulation of micro and macro economic activities.
