By Chukwuka Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – New Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek had an agreement to join Real Madrid before the coronavirus pandemic, according to his agent.
The Dutchman had been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu and was expected to join Los Blancos this summer, but the financial ramifications of the pandemic saw the deal fall through.
Van de Beek signed a five-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year for around £107,000 a week before bonuses with Manchester United instead.
Van de Beek’s agent Sjaak Swart told Marca: ‘There were many clubs interested in Van de Beek.
‘There was Madrid, Barca, Juve, Arsenal… in March everything was ready for him to go to Real Madrid, but with the pandemic everything was postponed. The clubs have no income. The whole scene changed.’
After completing his move to the Red Devils, Van de Beek said: ‘I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.
‘I would like to thank everyone at Ajax. I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.
‘I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.’
Having coming through the Ajax academy, the midfielder has made 175 appearances for the Dutch club, scoring 41 goals.
The 23-year-old became one of the stars of the team and will hope to recreate such form at Old Trafford.
On arrival at United, Van de Beek will line-up alongside the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in midfield.
