#Africa: Akon To Construct $6bn City In Senegal

By Amaechi Idumuebor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – African-American rapper, Akon, plans to construct an expansive $6 billion city in his Senegal homeland, to accommodate Africans of the diaspora returning home.

According to the multi award winning R&B crooner, during a press briefing on Monday, he has laid the first stone for the city in the Atlantic Ocean village of Mbodiene around 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of the Senegalese capital Dakar, adding that the motivation to build the city came from his experiences while growing up in the US state of New Jersey, where his family moved when he was seven, where he met several African-Americans who didn’t understand their roots.

Akon’s city, which has received the blessing — and advice — of Mbodiene’s elders, will contain hotels, a university, hospitals, business and leisure centres, including a casino, as well as movie studios, all featuring futuristic designs by architect Hussein Bakri, with African sculptures for inspiration.

Wakanda, the fictional African city of the “Black Panther” comic book series, served as additional inspiration, Akon acknowledged.
