By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Nigerians slamming the invitation of former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Deputy Governor, Obadiah Mailafia, for questioning by the Department of State Services, DSS, following his recent comments on Boko Haram, has attracted the angst of the Prsidency.
Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, expressed the Villa’s position on the matter, while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, where he said that Mailafia’s invitation by the DSS was in order.
According to Shehu, the action of the DSS was standard practice in any civilized society where the rule of law held sway, adding that Nigeria was not Mali.
Shehu questioned why Nigerians were against an invitation extended to a prominent citizen by a security agency in the country for making unsubstantiated claims about a serious issue of security concern, asking Nigerians not to read meanings into every legitimate action of the Presidency.
For the hate speech fine, Shehu called for its upwards review from N500,000 to deter would-be offenders.
Recall that following Mailafia’s claim on a radio programme that some governors in the North-East were supporting the Boko Haram terrorist group, the DSS had brought him in for questioning over his allegations, a move that drew the angst of a section of the public.
