By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The Edo State House of Assembly complex in Benin City, the state capital, has been taken over by Police operatives.
According to reports reaching AgendaWatchdog, the police presence was consequent to an alleged security threat to the facility.
The police team, which include operatives attached to the Police Mobile Force and Operation Thunderstorm, was led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Ayoola Ajala. They were later joined by personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
On Wednesday., state lawmakers had impeached the Deputy Speaker of the House, Yekini Idiaye, during plenary on and replaced him with Roland Asoro, the lawmaker representing Orhionmwon II Constituency, few days after Idiaye and four other lawmakers declared their support for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
The five lawmakers, who insisted that their decision to remain in the APC was because they had been elected on the party’s platform, were among the 10 members of the House inaugurated in July 2019 while 14 others have yet to be inaugurated.
