Stop Rehabilitating Terrorists, Give Succour To Displaced Persons – Senator Ndume

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Senator Ali Ndume, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, has faulted the deradicalisation of ex-Boko Haram members by the Nigerian Army, under the Operation Safe Corridor programme, calling the exercise a misplaced priority.

Ndume, who aired his views during an interview session on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said that the action was poorly timed as there were more pressing issues that should have been first addressed in the war theater, adding that the over one million displaced persons in various camps and communities in the North-East, who were still dealing with the post-traumatic effects of insurgency, deserved more attention than the repentant terrorists.

The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, urged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to rehabilitate the people that have been worst-hit by the insurgency in the region by supporting them with the means to start a new life, rather than rehabilitating repentant terrorists.

Operation Safe Corridor is an initiative of the Federal Government aimed at rehabilitating low-risk, “repentant” Boko Haram fighters.
