Yahaya Bello’s Election As Kogi Governor Affirmed By Appeal Court


By Franc Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The election of Mr Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the Governor of Kogi State, has been affirmed by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, in a judgment delivered on Saturday, June 4, 2020, following the court’s dismissal of the appeals filed by the opposition political parties and their candidates after they lost at the Tribunal.

The court dismissed the appeals filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Action Peoples Party (APP), and the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), challenging the outcome of the governorship election of November 2019 in Kogi State, on the grounds that they failed to prove the allegations of corruption and voter intimidation against the governor.

Alongside the dismissal of the appeals, Justice Mohammed Shuaibu aso affirmed the decision of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which dismissed the petition filed by the APP and awarded a cost of N100, 000 against the party, dismissed the appeal filed by the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), and that of the PDP’s candidate who was asked to pay a penalty of N100,000 each to Governor Bello, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and INEC, who were listed as respondents in the appeal.

Governor Yahaya Bello had been returned as Governor of Kogi State, On November 18, 2019, following the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that he had polled a total of 406,222 of the total votes cast at the gubernatorial poll.
