By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The National Assembly says that the Implementation of the 774,000 Public Works Programme would be suspended until modalities for its implementation are explained to it by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, adding that its decision was hinged on its concern about the proper and effective implementation of the programme.
Thus, the NASS, with regard to its oversight function, has directed its Committees on Labour and Productivity to summon the Hon. Minister for Labour and Productivity, alongside other significant agencies to appear before its Joint Committee to explain the modalities for the implementation of the initiative.
This was contained in a signed statement by Senator (Dr.) Ajibola Basiru and Hon. Benjamin O. Kalu, spokespersons of the Senate and House of Reps, in which the NASS stated that its actions where hinged on the fact that as elected representatives of the people, they were responsible for keeping their constituents informed about policies that affected them, assuring that, as was the case with the National Social Register by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, the NASS was determined to ensure transparency of the process, especially as the legislative body contributed its quota to the conception, approval and release of funds for the execution of the programme.
