Certificate Forgery: Court Strikes Out Suit Seeking To Bar Obaseki From Edo Gubernatorial Poll

By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – A suit seeking to bar Governor Godwin Obaseki from contesting in the September 2020 Gubernatorial Election in the state for supposedly falsifying his university certificate has been struck out by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Anwuli Chikere.

This followed the nonappearance of the counsels to the plaintiffs and defendants in court, in respect of the suit filed on May 29, 2020, by Edobor Williams, Ugesia Godwin, and Amedu Anakhu, with the All Progressives Congress (PC), the Inspector-General of Police, and Governor Obaseki as respondents.

According to the suit by the plaintiffs, Obaseki’s University of Ibadan Certificate in Classical Studies, which was submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) via Form CF.001 prior to the 2016 Governorship Election in Edo State was falsified, an offence that was contrary to the provisions of section 182(1)(i) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999”.
