Edo Governorship Election: INEC Reacts, Advises Against Lawsuits

By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), has spoken out on the Edo gubernatorial election schedules for September 19, 2020.

Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education, in a statement, disclosed that all issues relating to the conduct of party primaries, alongside resolution of disputes will end on Saturday, June 27, 2020, while submission of the list of candidates nominated as standard bearers of the parties at the election, together with their affidavits, will close on Monday, June 29, 2020.

However, INEC pointed out to the political parties that the plethora of pre-election lawsuits, alongside the emanating contradictory orders could scupper the fluid conduct of the primaries and the forthcoming elections proper, adding, however, that the commission, as a legal entity, was inclined to continue abiding by the directives of properly constituted courts.
