By Bonita Onyeka (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Plans by the Governor Seyi Makinde-led Oyo State Government to reopen schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic have been slammed by the Federal Government, which described the move as careless and inconsiderate.
The FG’s views were conveyed by Mr Emeka Uwajiuba, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Education, during the routine press briefing session of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, on Monday, June 22, 2020, in Abuja, FCT.
Uwajiuba used the occasion to remind the Oyo State Government that, as a federating unit, it could not operate outside the ambit of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, adding that in as much as the government of Oyo State had the freedom to reopen its schools, the security and general well-being of the populace was what mattered most.
The minister, however, called on Nigerian parents to keep their wards indoors to protect them from being infected with the deadly virus.
