By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Godwin Obaseki, the Edo State Governor, today, June 19, 2020, formally joined forces with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), having dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier in the week.
Obaseki, who picked up his PDP membership card at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, the Edo State capital, while addressing PDP officials, said that he had officially become the leader of the PDP in the state, stressing that he was ready to lead the party to victory in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state and provide quality leadership.
Governor Obaseki’s defection to the PDP is meant to actualize his second term ambition, following his disqualification from participating in the forthcoming APC Governorship Primary by the party’s screening committee, a development that effectively ended his dream of running on the card of the ruling party in the September Governorship Election.
Before today’s announcement, Obaseki, following his resignation from the APC, had been in consultation with PDP national leaders as part of measures to prepare a soft-landing base for his imminent defection.
If he gets the PDP’s nomination to fly its banner in the September election, as is expected, he would be contending with either (depending on which of them wins the APC Primaries), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Dr Pius Odubu, or Osaro Obazee, familiar foes from earlier confrontations.
