By Olivia Isibor (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Following the formal resignation of incumbent Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party has denied knowledge of the embattled governor’s departure from its fold.
The APC spoke through its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who, in a statement said that the party had no official record of Obaseki’s purported resignation, adding that the party could not rely on media speculations suggesting that a member of their party had resigned.
Following a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja, on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, Governor Obaseki had announced his formal resignation from the APC, consequent to his disqualification by the party’s screening committee from contesting in the party’s governorship primaries on grounds of possessing defective academic credentials.
Despite not categorically naming the party he would be joining to actualize his second term bid, the rumour mill has been riff, consequent to the series of meetings Obaseki held with some bigwigs of the key opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), prior to today’s announcement, that the he was seeking the Edo PDP’s ticket to contest in the September gubernatorial election in Edo State.
