Nigeria’s COVID-19 Testing Capacity Increases, As NCDC Activates 3 More Laboratories


Lilian Ogbonna (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – In its bid to rapidly scale up laboratory testing for COVID-19 in Nigeria, three additional laboratories capable of carrying out PCR testing for Coronavirus (COVID-19), have been activated by the  Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), bringing the total number of such laboratories in the country to 33.

This was disclosed by Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General of NCDC, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, in Abuja.

According to the D.G, the three new laboratories are: Biorepository and Clinical Virology Laboratory UCH, Ibadan, Oyo; Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, Infectious Disease Unit, General Hospital, Ituk Mkpang, Akwa-Ibom and Jigawa State Molecular Laboratory, Dutse.

Ihekweazu added that in the absence of validated alternative methods, the agency was currently using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method to  test for COVID-19.
