Senate President, Principal Officers, Welcome Uzor Kalu Back from Prison

By Lilian Ogbonna (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, former Abia State Governor, was welcomed back from the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kuje, Abuja, by his colleagues in the upper legislative chamber, led by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who paid him a welcome visit at his Abuja residence on Thursday night. Some of the Senators in Lawan’s entourage include, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege; Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi; Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe; and Deputy Whip, and Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

Kalu, who was serving a 12-year jail term, following his conviction, alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and a former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu, in December last year, by a Federal High Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing about N7.1billion from Abia State treasury, had the judgment that convicted him upturned by the Supreme Court, via a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel led by Justice Amina Augie, on May 8, 2020, on the grounds that the Federal High Court in Lagos acted without jurisdiction when it convicted Kalu, due to the fact that Justice Mohammed Idris, who presided over the matter had been promoted to the Court of Appeal as at the time he sat in judgment, which effectively made his judgment null and void.

However, Kalu’s legal team approached a Federal High Court in Lagos seeking clarifications on the judgment annulling his conviction, since the Supreme Court was not explicit on whether Kalu should be released from confinement or not, following which the Federal High Court led by Justice Mohammed Liman, granted the plea of the applicant and ordered the immediate release of Kalu, from the Kuje Prison.
