President Buhari’s Speech Did Not Capture Abacha’s $5 Billion Booty – ASCAB

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that the late Sani Abacha stole $1 billion only, is a gross contradiction of figures earlier disclosed by his own officials, says Alliance for Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond, (ASCAB), a civil society group led by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, via press release by its Pub¬licity Secretary, Adewale Adeoye.

ASCAB made reference to the President’s statement in an article published in Newsweek magazine that the regime of the late Sani Abacaha stole $1bn, a figure that is considered below one fifth of the total sum officials of Buhari’s administration claimed had been recovered from the late military strongman, creating the impression that the present administration’s much vaunted anti-corruption war was not as transparent as is widely thought, consequent to its attempt to seemingly conceal the actual amount that was pilfered from the country’s exchequer by a brutal regime that ruled the country for five years.

A Transparency International, (TI), report had claimed that the FG had recovered about $3.6 billion loot from the late Abacha between 1998-2020, which contradicts Buhari’s statement in the said Newsweek magazine publication in which he made reference to “close to $1bn of funds stolen from the people of Nigeria under a previous, undemocratic junta in the 1990s that have now been re¬turned to our country from the US, UK and Switzerland”.
