Abacha Stole More Than $1Billion – SERAP TO FG

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Accountability watchdog, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has claimed that former military strongman, General Sani Abacha, “stole more than $1bn”, contrary to what the public was being made to believe. SERAP made the disclosure via a twitter response to a statement by President Muhammadu Buhari that approximately $1bn was “stolen under a previous, undemocratic junta in the 1990s”, which is thought to be a reference to the infamous Sani Abacha era.

SERAP asked the president to provide further clarification on his statement by publishing spending details on assets recovered by the federal governments since 1999.

President Buhari, in a recent article published in Newsweek, a United States-based magazine, expressed the country’s readiness to proceed with development projects such as road, rail and power station construction, consequent to the return by the US, Switzerland and UK governments of approximately $1bn stolen by a military junta that ruled the country in the 1990s.
