Don’t Cut Workers Salaries, NLC Cautions Governments, Employers Of Labour

Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has advised government at all levels and employers of labour to refrain from arbitrarily deducting the salaries of workers or relieve them of their employments during the Eid el Fitr celebrations. Rather, labour urged governments and employers of labour to use the occasion of the celebration of the Muslim festival to secure the jobs of workers in the country.

This was contained in a sallah message by the President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, who called on Muslim faithful in the country to pray for Nigeria as the war on the COVID-19 pandemic continues globally. He also harped on the need to continue adhering to safety guidelines put in place by the government and health institutions meant to stem the further spread of the virus such as regular washing of hands, use of sanitizers and social distancing.

The NLC leader lauded Nigerian workers for the resilience so far shown in the face of the hardships induced by the COVID-19 lockdowns, alongside threats to their livelihoods by employers of labour in various sectors of the nation’s economy, urging them to stay strong and committed to the battles ahead. .
