#COVID-19: Nyesom Wike Urges Oil Corporations To Cooperate With The State Government

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Oil corporation in Rivers State have been urged by the State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, to corporate with the state government in the war on the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

The governor made the plea on Friday, May 22, 2020 at the Rivers State Government House while receiving a delegation from Mobil Nigeria Unlimited, led by its Managing Director, Mr Udobong Ntia. Governor Wike, while addressing the Mobil delegation, stressed the need for synergy between the state and oil companies operating within its borders, adding that it was not in the character of the state to deny organizations carrying out their legitimate businesses their liberties, pointing out, however, that such activities should be carried out within legal limits and with due regard for public safety.

While accepting the primacy of oil as the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, Wike pointed out, however, that 60% of the COVID-19 cases in Rivers State were from the oil sector, development that informed his administration’s insistence that all oil company personnel coming into the state should be made to submit themselves to the state’s health authorities to ascertain their COVID-19 statuses, in order to further safeguard public health by preventing a worst case scenario.
