Bulk Of COVID-19 Cases In Rivers State Are From The Oil Sector – Wike

By Franca Joseph (AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The bulk of COVID-19 cases in Rivers State are from the oil sector, according to Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Disclosing this while hosting the Management Team of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, Wike stated that it was to prevent this worst case scenario that his administration had insisted that any oil corporation employee coming into the state should be tested for the virus.

While emphasizing that the state recognized the primacy of oil as the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, the governor said that his chief concern was to ensure that cases of COVID-19 in the state does not spiral out of control, hence his insistence that any oil company employee that was coming into the state should be tested for COVID-19, adding that it was not in his interest to inhibit people from performing their official duties.

On the allegation that he was stopping foodstuff and livestock from being brought into the state, the governor denied having such a motive, insisting that in as much as food and livestock were necessary for nutrition, hiding human beings among these items would not be allowed.

Governor Wike called on all stakeholders in the state to work together for the benefit of Rivers State.
