(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Consequent to the Supreme Courts’s nullification of an initial judgement that had convicted former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu , his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and Jones Udeogu, a former Director of Finance and Account of Abia State Government, for purportedly stealing N7.1billion during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set for immediate retrial.
The EFCC views the Supreme Court Judgement as “a technical ambush” against Orji Uzor’s trial and conviction, stressing the commission’s readiness to immediately embark on fresh trial of the case, adding that it had irrefutable evidence to prove that the former governor was guilty of the accusation of corrupt practices leveled against him.
According to the EFCC, since the apex Court did not acquit the former governor of the charges against him, a fresh trial will be conducted to ensure that justice was served at the end of the day.
The Supreme Court had nullified an initial High Court judgement that had found the former governor guilty of the corruption charges leveled against him on the technical grounds that the seating Judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, had been promoted to the Appeal Court prior to the judgement, which automatically made the judgement null and void since the seating judge no longer had jurisdiction on the matter. It had, therefore, ordered a retrial.
