#COVID-19: Kaduna Workers Vow To Down Tools Over Salary Deduction

By Franca Joseph, For Agenda Watchdog, April 30, 2020

(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – In reaction to the deduction of 25 percent of the salaries of senior civil servants in Kaduna State by Governor Nasiru Ahmad El-Rufa’i, which he said were due to challenges arising from #COVID-19, the affected civil servants have warned that if the governor did not reverse his decision, they would down tools.

According the NLC state Chairman, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, while expressing the union’s position on the matter, on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, the state government’s action was illegal, amoral and disrespectful. He wondered why people should be forced to contribute financially to a cause that is ideally the preserve of government. He directed the government to desist from further salary deductions and to reimburse the 25 percent that had already been deducted to the affected workers.

Governor El-Rufai had recently announced plans by his administration to deduct 25 percent from the salaries of civil servants in the state receiving above N67, 000 to cater for the needs of the poor and vulnerable in the state consequent to the outbreak of COVID-19.
