By Franca Joseph, For Agenda Watchdog, April 30, 2020

(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Employers of labour in Nigeria have been warned not to stop or reduce the salaries of workers in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the position of the country’s apex labour body, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as disclosed by the union’s  President, Ayuba Wabba, in a statement.

According to Wabba, it is “illegal” to stop the salaries which constitutes “core elements of employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements”, adding that the body had instructed workers to resist any attempt by their employers to stop or deduct their salaries on the grounds of the #COVID-19 pandemic.

Wabba also pointed out that workers deserved their wages, which were rewards for their contributions to the wealth creation processes.  He advised employers to show comradeship with their employees in these trying times for their past contributions to their successes.
