(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Accountability watchdog, the Social Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has asked President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President, Dr Lawan & Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Gbajabiamila to desists from their ill-conceived plans to illegally deduct N77bn from healthcare & education budgets. It advised the National Assembly and the Presidency to cut their budgets in 14 days or face legal action. According to the group, both arms of government, despite the availability of options, choose to lay the burden of the budget on the poor and vulnerable members of the society.
Tweeting on its verified handle, SERAP added, “We said in our letters sent yesterday: “These cuts are not inevitable. Continuing to neglect these basic public services to sustain the apparently lavish lifestyles of members of NASS & other powerful politicians wound exacerbate poverty, inequality, marginalization & impunity.”
SERAP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal & advocacy org. devoted to promoting transparency, accountability & respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria.
