By Amechi Idumuebor, For Agenda Watchdog, April 20, 2020

(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – The revered Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II, has written the Edo State Governor, Godwin Enogheghase Obaseki, asking him to immediately declare and enforce a complete lockdown of Edo State to check the further spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Oba Ewuare emphasized the need for the strict enforcement of safety regulations prescribed by health authorities such as social distancing, stay-at-home and other hygienic practices if there is to be progress in the campaign against the virus.

The Oba was concerned about the rising cases of the disease in the state, and expressed the need for the authorities to take preventive steps to prevent a second wave of infections in the state by adopting proactive measures that are in line with best practices  across the world for the prevention of infectious diseases.

Oba Ewuare also called for the distribution of palliatives to the poor and vulnerable citizens of the state who would be most impacted by the disruptions to their economic lives occasioned by the restriction of movement imposed by the state government.
