(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – COVID-19 has suddenly made a quantum leap in Nigeria as latest reports suggest that the country has recorded 304 fresh cases, coupled with eleven deaths, in the past one week, in 21 states of the federation, including Abuja, the Federal Capital territory (FCT). These were the official figures announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as at Sunday, April 19, 2020.
The boom in new cases of the virus might not be unconnected with increased testing which has resulted in the confirmation of more cases. For instance, in Lagos, the epicenter of the virus in Nigeria with 376 (187 in the past week) out of the 627 (60% of the total), confirmed cases, the state government is increasing its testing capacity, the most recent being the setting up of Sampling Stations in its 20 Local Government Areas. Other states of the federation are also trying to boost their testing capacities to enable them develop effective containment measures.
However, there seems to be a glimmer of hope as the total number of discharged patients for the virus have risen from 85 to 170 in the recent week, with Lagos accounting for 43 of those discharged. The country has recorded 21 fatalities so far from the virus.
