(AGENDAWATCHDOG) – Dr Bella Nifemi, one of the doctors working at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Yaba, Lagos, an Isolation center for COVID-19 patients, has advised her colleagues who secretly manage affluent COVID-19 patients in their homes for “mouthwatering offers” to desist from doing so as their lives were more precious than the monetary rewards they were after. She made her entreaties through series of tweets on her handle.
Bella cited the cases of doctors who got infected by COVID-19, one of who recently died, after attending privately to a rich client who was infected with the virus, and advised her colleagues to rather encourage their clients to come to the government approved, safer and better equipped isolation centers for proper treatment, instead of risking their lives for money. She insisted that no matter how mouthwatering the inducements were, doctors must be wary of the likely dire consequences of such risky and unethical practices.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) recently announced the death of a doctor who died from complications arising from being infected with COVID-19 by a rich patient he was treating privately.
